The Scooby gang returns for new adventures in "Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed." This time around, Mystery Inc. must not only battle monsters such as the 10,000 Volt Ghost and the Tar Monster, but also face bad publicity and self-doubt for the first time in their careers. Described as more emotional than the first "Scooby-Doo" movie, "Monsters Unleashed" is loaded with classic monsters from the cartoon series along with supporting performances by Seth Green, Alicia Silverstone, and Peter Boyle.
The World Premiere of "Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed" was a charity event benefiting the United Friends of Children, a non-profit organization founded by Nancy Daly Riordan to better the lives of foster children. Serving the dual purpose of raising awareness for United Friends of Children and celebrating the release of the second "Scooby-Doo" movie, Warner Bros. created a festive atmosphere complete with live performances by Simple Plan and Ruben Studdard. Though the concert was fun for premiere guests, it made it tough to get any of the cast members interested in walking the red carpet to do interviews. Fortunately, Linda Cardellini, director Raja Gosnell, writer James Gunn, and "Scooby-Doo" newcomer Seth Green spent some time talking about the film before going off to party.
INTERVIEW WITH LINDA CARDELLINI ('Velma'):
Is there any particular scene from the "Scooby-Doo" series you consider your favorite?My favorite part was when Velma lost her glasses, and that definitely happens in the movie.
At the premiere of the first "Scooby-Doo" we talked about the fact you keep playing intelligent women. Now with your casting on "ER," that trend seems to be continuing.(Laughing) Right. You know, I don’t know. Somebody must think I’m smart somewhere. It’s great. They always have the most interesting things to do - being an intelligent woman. And you know the funny part is that Velma’s intelligent in a way that Sam Taggart isn’t on "ER." It’s really great the different types of women you can play who have brains.
And this time around, you get a love interest.I do. It was really fun. Seth Green is so easy to work with. He’s so great and we just had such a good time. In fact, we kept improv'ing back and forth when I was in the red leather outfit and the line that we improv'd ended up in the movie. The outfit makes a terrible squeaking noise and I say, “Oh, that’s my outfit – I swear!” We laughed so hard, we had such a good time. That just came out of us fooling around.
So we'll see a sexier Velma this time around?For a split second she is. She’s matured a little bit but she is in love with Seth Green’s character and so she wants to impress him because he thinks she is a glamourous spy. So Daphne dresses her up to be a glamourous spy, which of course she’s totally uncomfortable with and [it] doesn’t work out.
Were you comfortable in that outfit?(Laughing) No – and that was perfect because she’s supposed to feel awkward. It’s a little daunting.
How many more of these movies do you think you can do?I don’t know, it depends. Especially now that I’m on "ER" and I’m playing something totally night and day from this. It’s kind of fun to go back and forth.
So you enjoy the juxtaposition of the two?I do - and not that many female characters are that smart and that crazy at the same time.
